About the Lewa Safari Marathon
Participating in a marathon within an African Wildlife Conservancy offers a unique and unparalleled opportunity to engage with the world’s most remarkable wildlife. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, located in Northern Kenya, is home to the renowned Lewa Safari Marathon, an event jointly organised by Tusk, Lewa, and Safaricom. Each year, participants traverse a breathtaking landscape that is home to the iconic Big Five, offering a truly extraordinary experience.
The Lewa Safari Marathon is not just a personal challenge, this unique festival of running, featuring three main distances, full marathon, half-marathon and 10k has supported conservation projects across Kenya for over 25 years. By taking part, every single participant plays a huge role in helping local communities and raising awareness of the threats facing Africa’s incredible wildlife.

The Wildlife of Lewa
For many, Kenya is famous for two things, its beautiful wildlife and its long-distance running champions. The Lewa Safari Marathon takes special pride in bringing these two aspects together.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is a UNESCO world heritage site, known for its diverse habitats of pristine forest, extensive grasslands, numerous springs and woodland which provide a stunning location for this event. With an early start to avoid the heat of the day, you’ll be running at a mere 5,500 ft above sea level along rocky trails interspersed with welcome intervals under the shadow of giant acacia trees.
Lewa supports more than 70 different animal species roaming the vast grasslands and is also home to more than 400 species of birds. With one of the highest wildlife densities in Kenya, including 12% of the country’s critically endangered black and white rhinos, and the world’s single largest population of Grevy’s zebra, this marathon is like no other.
